How to Count Words and Characters

Instant, accurate word and character counts — just type or paste your text.

1

Paste or Type Your Text

Click in the text area and paste your content (Ctrl+V / Cmd+V), or type directly. The counter updates in real time as you type.

2

View Live Statistics

See words, characters (with and without spaces), sentences, paragraphs, and estimated reading time — all updated instantly.

3

Check Against Limits

Compare your count against common limits: Twitter's 280 characters, LinkedIn's 3,000-character summary, or your essay word limit.

4

Copy or Clear

Copy the text back to your clipboard once edited, or clear the area to start a new count. No data is saved or transmitted.

Why Use an Online Word Counter?

Whether you're a student, blogger, or content marketer — word counts matter.

🎓

Academic Requirements

Essays, theses, and assignments often have strict word limits. Get an accurate count to ensure you meet — or don't exceed — the requirement.

📈

SEO Content Planning

Blog posts and landing pages have optimal length targets (1,500–2,500 words for most topics). Track your word count as you write.

📱

Social Media Limits

Every platform has its own character limit. Check that your caption, bio, or tweet fits before you copy it over and hit "Post".

Instant & Private

Counts update live as you type. Your text is never sent to a server — all processing runs locally in your browser.

Both. The tool displays character count with spaces (including every space and newline) and without spaces (counting only visible characters). Twitter and Instagram use character-with-spaces counts for their limits.
