A word is any sequence of non-whitespace characters separated by spaces or line breaks. Hyphenated words like "well-being" count as one word. Numbers, abbreviations, and punctuation-attached words (e.g., "end.") are each counted as one word.
Both. The tool displays character count with spaces (including every space and newline) and without spaces (counting only visible characters). Twitter and Instagram use character-with-spaces counts for their limits.
